Background
The New Zealand Jiu Jitsu School
of Self Defence was founded in 1995 by Doug Bailey (Hastings) and Michael Hickson
(Palmerston North), and was joined by Kerry Young (Hamilton) in 1997.
Also in 1997, Steve Olivecrona (Palmerston North) amalgamated his Olivecrona
Ju-Jutsu club with the NZJJS.
All four Instructors had as their background
Kawaishi Nihon Goshin Jitsu, but with Steve's amalgamation the NZJJS adopted his system
of jiu jitsu - a modernised form of Kawaishi jiu jitsu that Steve
had adapted to meet his needs as a security business owner. Nearly two decades
in the industry had seen him test his jiu jitsu skills in numerous
situations, and he had formulated his own training to create a practical, effective
and safe approach to jiu jitsu that he then shared with the other Instructors.
The System
The NZJJS system has two coloured and three black belt syllabus grades with training
in the areas of Outfighting (strikes), Infighting (clinches, strikes, throws,
jointlocks and chokes), Groundfighting (holds, strikes, jointlocks and chokes)
and modern Weaponry (stick, short stick and knife).
Tuition is delivered using the principles of theme learning and free practice takes
a large part in the testing of techniques. Gradings are informal and reflect
a student's effectiveness as much as their technical ability. Furthermore, students
at higher levels are encouraged to individualise their techniques.
In addition to self defence jiu jitsu, NZJJS members compete regularly
on the Sport Ju-Jitsu New Zealand National Circuit, using the tournaments
to test themselves and their techniques against martial artists from other
schools throughout New Zealand. Since SJJ(NZ)'s foundation in 1999, NZJJS clubs
have been in the top three places every year. Furthermore, 10 NZJJS members
have represented New Zealand at World Games level.
Whilst the NZJJS recognises its Japanese roots, it is primarily focussed on
delivering a safe, effective system of jiu jitsu, drawing on modern sports
science practices, and taught in a western manner. Effectiveness is the
goal along with a quiet sense of confidence and a good sense of humour.
